I am a naturally shy person; I have never written a blog before. I am writing this now, allowing my thoughts and emotions to flow with my eyes closed. It is easier this way.
The Wing Tsun feeling begins when you enter the training room. You bow, go quietly to your place, put down your belongings, take your chest guard and water out of your bag, do some stretching, and prepare your body and mind for training. You look at your teacher, whose thoughts revolve around you, deciding what to draw from the wide range of his knowledge and pass on to you with the greatest care and love.
You greet your kung fu brothers and sisters—old and new—wearing T-shirts of various colours. They all burn with the desire to learn.
We line up, bow, and pay respect to the ancestors. Without them, we could not be here today. We bow to our Si-Fu and Si-Hings; without them, we could not be here either. Then we greet each other—kung fu brothers and sisters. Here and now, we are a family, helping one another to become skilful, to grow together, and to share something very special.
We begin with the first form (Siu Nim Tau), and the magic begins in the room…
Physically, we are in the training room, but in spirit and mind, we are hundreds of years in the past, in the time of Grandmaster Yip Man, who is looking down on us with an otherworldly smile.
Beautiful movements, stunning choreography—almost like dancing. Yet beneath the surface, every application is well designed and truly effective for self-defence.
We train in pairs, and our instructors move around, standing beside us, showing the movements again and again—helping, encouraging, and refining our technique. They support everyone in a way that reflects each individual’s needs.
You feel as if you are in a bubble; the outside world ceases to exist. Wing Tsun is the only thing that exists in that moment. You give yourself to the power and attraction flowing from the ancestors to you, beyond time and space.
The two hours fly by. Before finishing training, we do some isometric exercises to strengthen our muscles (better than the gym). Soon, we return to the present moment.
You realise you have sweated, you feel a little exhausted, but you are also sad that the training has ended. We line up again, and the closing ritual is the same as when we entered the room.
I can only feel what I receive from Wing Tsun during the training sessions. What I can give back comes from my kung fu brothers and sisters. When they thank me for practising together, when they say they missed me when I couldn’t attend, or when they ask me after training to show them a movement again—these moments make me happy. When they successfully pass a grading and thank me for my help, it makes me feel that I can also contribute to Wing Tsun, just as my Si-Fu does with all his heart to keep authentic Wing Tsun alive.
I feel it is important to honour the ancestors of this beautiful martial art, who are no longer with us, and to honour our amazing instructors, who make incredible sacrifices to pass on their knowledge.
And we must honour each other as well—kung fu brothers and sisters—because it is a great gift that we can practise together.
I would also like to thank my dear husband for all his support and encouragement throughout my journey.
I wish you all a sunny spring and a beautiful Wing Tsun journey. 😊
