A few months ago, after putting off the idea for a long time, I decided to look for a self-defence course for women, even though I wasn’t entirely sure where to start. I was hesitant at first, especially when trying to find the right time around my work, studies and family commitments. I had recently graduated with a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing while working full-time in the Security Industry and maintaining a very busy family life. I needed something that would allow me to grow in ways that aligned with what I was already doing. I came across an advert online for a local Wing Tsun class run by Si-Hing Gergö in Greenwich, conveniently accessible by public transport and ideally close to my home, that offered a trial session. Despite my initial uncertainties and encouraged by this opportunity and the school’s ideal location, I decided to enrol for the day. I had no idea what to expect, as I had never heard of Wing Tsun before, having only witnessed my brother mastering Krav Maga and both my sons practising Karate, Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA at professional levels. Although I was a little apprehensive, knowing that I was a total beginner and probably one of the oldest attendees, I turned up for the session with a glimpse of hope that I would at least claim to have learned something new. I was happy to see that the training emphasised respect, safety, and proper techniques, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where beginners can learn confidently without fear of injury, making it a safe space for everyone.
My first impression from the very first day was that the class brought together a diverse group of people from different backgrounds and age groups, ranging from complete beginners to those with varying levels of experience. I immediately felt at ease with the environment, which was welcoming and supportive; the atmosphere was highly captivating and non-judgmental, making the experience both engaging and enjoyable. From the outset, it became evident to me that the art of Wing Tsun empowers its participants and equips them with valuable skills. Because of this, I signed up with the classes on the same day of my trial, as I did not want to miss a single day of training. Overall, it has proven to be one of the best decisions I have ever had to take and an excellent opportunity for my personal growth and confidence-building; I believe it is also the perfect choice for anyone interested in enhancing their self-defence capabilities without the pressure of competitions, which are normally associated with other forms of martial arts. The class is designed to accommodate all fitness levels and ages, making it accessible and beneficial for everyone interested in self-defence and personal development.
Additionally, it is very refreshing to see that the students genuinely support one another on their growth journey, promoting a sense of community and collaboration. This positive dynamic has made my learning experience even more enriching and effective, making me feel empowered and connected to others.
It is now six months since I became a member of the Wing Tsun family, and I have not regretted one single day. I have also attended other centres and two seminars, where I met other students and trained at different levels. I have already earned my level 2 grade and feel valued and respected by everyone, which has brought so much positivity into my life and given me the confidence to overcome any obstacles I may find on my path.
Thank you to all the members of the Wing Tsun family.
