My practice in Chinese Kung Fu started almost 20 years ago in Athens Greece. Over time, I realised that its core is really about self-development. The biggest benefit isn’t just physical,it’s becoming more balanced, confident and finally a better version of yourself. And that’s not something that happens magically.
The training is designed to make you focus and build mental discipline. After practice, you feel a clear mind, which helps you step back, notice your behaviour, and adjust how you think and act. At the end, Kung Fu teaches that the real challenge is within yourself, not your opponent. Over the years, this mindset has helped me become a better partner, friend, colleague and leave many bad habits behind
I started my journey with Lam Ga Hung Kuen, and I was immediately drawn to the depth and tradition of the KungFu world.I seeked for original lineages, trained under Chinese masters, went deep into forms and weapons. At the same time, I practised Tai Chi Chuan to manage a spinal injury I had since a young age, which was a big challenge. In a very interesting way WingTsun was always in the background. During a trip to Hong Kong I noticed a wooden dummy in the traditional HungKuen school,my teachers explained it was there out of respect for WingTsun Grandmaster Ip Man and his influence in the community…
Just a couple of streets away, I also came across the International WingTsun Association headquarters…At the time, it didn’t mean much, but looking back, it was obviously an early sign…Later while training in London for a spear form competition in South China, a heavy landing triggered my spine injury badly. I had to stop training and work for a while, the advice from doctors was clear-to avoid jumps, landings, long movements and sudden streches. That’s when things started to shift.
WingTsun with its focus on economy on movement and close-range application made a lot of sense to me. Based on my experience and understanding on authentic KungFu structure, the Leung Ting lineage stood out as the right path to follow. So I began looking for an official school in London and that’s how my next chapter started eventually leading me to WingTsun London and Si-Hing Gabor Spenger.
Observing the talented Si-Hing’s movement day after day,I was getting more and more curious.
There was something unique about it, the efficiency, the directness. The most practical elements of the traditional KungFu distilled into a system built around a triangular stance and a centerline strategy. I realised I was looking at something unexpectedly different
ChiSao and Si-Fu Ferenc Kovacs : My growing interest and passion for the core of the art quickly led me to become a private student of Si-Fu Ferenc Kovacs. From that point on, a whole new world started unfolding in front of me.
Through Si-Fu’s generous teachings,I began to truly feel and understand the aim behind WingTsun’s core exercise-Chi Sao is a scientific method that integrates offensive self-defense techniques directly into an individual’s tactile reflexes, making reactions instinctive.I became completely absorbed in it. That obsession made one thing clear to me.I had finally found the KungFu art that I’ll be practising for the rest of my life
Later on, thanks to my Si-Fu and Si-Hing Gabor, I found myself in Hungary. Up to that point, I already knew a bit about the history of IWTA as the biggest Kung Fu organisation ever to exist, including its European and American sections, but I still couldn’t imagine what I was about to experience. I walked into an army of WingTsun fighters, all lined up and waiting for their leader. Then Si-Kung Maday Norbert appeared. Everyone bowed, and the training began. Si-Kung started demonstrating ChiSao variations and techniques, and everyone was watching, barely believing what we were seeing.
The power generated, the speed an eye couldn’t catch, the precision of the strikes was all on another level. I’ve previously trained with high-level Kung Fu masters, but this was something I’d never seen before. The WingTsun Grandmaster left me speechless. In that moment, I had no doubts anymore. I had found the source, the purest expression of the art and without question the best KungFu I had ever come across
