My First Six Months at Wing Tsun London

I have been a member of Wing Tsun London for around six months. I haven’t been here long, but I felt compelled to share some thoughts and feelings about my first months learning Wing Tsun.

I’ve never been a particularly patient person; I’ve always wanted to progress fast at whatever I do. My first learning, which came during my very first class, was the realisation that I have to be patient and let go of my ego. Siu Nim Tao is the perfect example of this: to me, it represents a letting go of self through the physical channelling of hundreds of years of masters, a teaching SiKung shared in his summer seminar, which I had the pleasure of attending. The first form requires patience; it takes years to master and hides many secrets that can only be uncovered with a slow and methodical approach. From practising at home, discussing with classmates, and exploring applications in class, Siu Nim Tao continues to teach me a valuable way of approaching life.

Wing Tsun, to me, is an incredibly personal pursuit: at the end of the day, we strive to develop our own skills and mindset. As many of my classmates know, this includes the study of Wing Tsun’s philosophy as well as solo practice at home.
So yes, learning Wing Tsun is a personal journey, yet it is certainly not a lonely one. At WTL I have found a group of SiHings who consistently push me to be better and who show a depth of knowledge in their practice that is rare to see in any subject. I would especially like to mention SiHing Ant, whose patient guidance consistently helps me improve and learn, and of course SiHing Raza for his rare balance of wisdom and humour.

Beyond the SiHings, the community of students here is incredible. Everyone is keen to learn and share experiences. In my first few weeks, I was surprised at how helpful everyone was, how they patiently guided me through difficult cycles and applications.
I believe this is a unique feature of WTL: a genuinely caring, compassionate, and selfless community who see bettering others as a way of bettering themselves.

I have read the other blog posts from our SiHings and wanted to reiterate the gratitude I feel for finding Wing Tsun London and for the community I have had the pleasure of joining. Thank you everyone, and see you in class.
