“Wing Tsun is life itself” – one of the most interesting quotes of SiKung Norbert Máday that I’ve
been carrying for more than a decade of practicing, yet it takes a great amount of time to
understand in a deeper sense. The way of thinking in the East is based on a more layered system
than it might seem on first impression.
We are living in a life which is established on routine and habit – in turn based on perspectives
formed during childhood where we learned how the world works. The way of our upbringing also
determines our mindset, rational thinking and decision-making in all aspects of our lives.
As one decides to join a Martial arts school – we first see the surface, the techniques and
combinations, understanding the connection between the moves – usually this initial encounter
hooks us into commitment.
In the beginning we adjust our free-time to be able to attend classes regularly and follow the flow
of the trainings – not even thinking that we are walking in the footsteps on the same path as our
masters and instructors did (SiFu, SiMeis and SiHings). This realisation and profound vision
comes with time and dedication.
Some join trainings because of the physical benefits they can gain; yet some attend because of
the community we built where they can belong to. Some would like to become the masters of the
future, teaching in their own school to inherit and pass their knowledge on.
During years of practicing more and more dots connect, either we get to find them by ourselves or
with the help of one of the advanced students or masters. As a previous blog mentioned: Wing
Tsun has many layers to it. The higher level techniques are most of the time in plain sight (even on
beginner classes) – yet they are hard to see without a “lantern”. This makes Wing Tsun so
intriguing.
The hard-work of SiFu Ferenc Kovács and SiHing Gábor Spenger since the birth of Wing Tsun
London allows all members to be part of the world-renowned EEWTO grading system – with the
ability to attend events, seminars and training camps.
It is a great journey through the student grades which can’t be rushed, it takes time to increase
the technical and theoretical knowledge to the needed level. There are no competitions, trophies
or medals; we are competing with ourselves.
When I was younger the master levels felt so far, seeing all the icons of Wing Tsun reaching to
sky-high levels. Achieving the first technician level we think we are at the end, but it’s clearly not
even the beginning: the system slowly reveals itself, we find ourselves in a more extensive field
with more questions than ever before – and this is how the real beauty of Wing Tsun shines.
Our duties change: helping, correcting techniques of beginners, teaching, not as a coach nor a
private trainer but as a symbol. We represent those previous masters who committed their whole
life to the same cause – these steps trace back to the Wing Tsun’s real roots.
The perspective of a master changes during the years, and their goal is something more than just
passing on the comprehension.
Taking part as a master on local seminars, master- and advanced classes in London, or abroad is
not only essential for the students but for our personal development as well – as everyone needs
to train on their own level. The river can only flow with crystal clear water if it is connected to its
source.
